590–720kcal
One serving of each food listed below, ±10% for the hand that cooks it. A scale check, not a target. The Tuesday fast for Hanuman. A single-meal day, customarily with food eaten once, often sweet — many households take only jaggery-based or wheat-based prasad food.
As the dataset states it: Sunrise until the evening, most commonly.

What Mangalwar Vrat is
Mangalwar vrat is dedicated to Hanuman and is widely kept, often for a fixed number of consecutive Tuesdays as a vow. It has a distinctive dietary custom in many households: only one meal, and in some traditions food that is sweet, or specifically not salty.
That salt restriction is the practically interesting part. A day with almost no sodium, in Indian heat, is a different physiological day from a day with normal salt — particularly for anyone who sweats heavily or trains.
Customs vary. The salt custom, whether the meal is sweet, and how many Tuesdays are kept all differ by family and region.
How this entry is drawn, and how the food is counted
- The observance is read from published accounts of Mangalwar Vrat and written as commonly observed — never as required, never as correct. Where households differ, the entry says they differ.
- The arc above places the observed span between named stations of the day — sunrise, midday, sunset, moonrise — and never between times. Sehri, iftar, moonrise and sunset are local and religiously significant, and this site publishes none of them.
- The length is taken from the range the dataset itself states, as a range. Where the length turns on latitude and season, no duration is printed at all.
- Food energy is per the serving each item is really eaten in, from IFCT 2017 (ICMR–NIN) where the table has the food, and from a named alternative where it does not.
- Every food is reconciled against Atwater factors on each build, and a page that fails to reconcile does not ship.
serving kcal = per-100 g kcal × (serving g ÷ 100) energy check = 4·protein + 4·carbohydrate + 9·fat (±15%, ±20% high-fibre) day shape = observed span, station → station (no clock times, ever)
What is customarily eaten, and what is set aside
Described as commonly observed. Your own family's practice is the one that applies.
Commonly eaten
- One meal, in many households sweet — jaggery, wheat-based prasad, or fruit
- Milk and fruit through the day in some observances
Customarily set aside
- Salt, in many households — this is the distinguishing custom
- Meat, fish, eggs, onion, garlic and alcohol

The food, with the numbers
Foods commonly associated with Mangalwar Vrat, at the serving each is really eaten in. Every one has its own page with the full breakdown.
| Food | One serving is | ಕ್ಯಾಲೊರಿಗಳು | ಪ್ರೋಟೀನ್ | ಕಾರ್ಬ್ಸ್ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaggery (Gur) | 1 small piece · 20 g | 77 kcal | 0.1 g | 19.0 g |
| ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು | 1 medium banana · 100 g | 105 kcal | 1.3 g | 24.0 g |
| Cow Milk (full cream) | 1 glass · 200 g | 124 kcal | 6.4 g | 9.0 g |
| Dates (Khajoor) | 2 dates · 16 g | 46 kcal | 0.4 g | 10.9 g |
| Fruit Chaat | 1 plate · 200 g | 114 kcal | 1.6 g | 25.4 g |
| Curd (Dahi) | 1 ಕಟೋರಿ · 150 g | 90 kcal | 4.7 g | 4.5 g |
| Tender Coconut Water | 1 coconut · 250 g | 50 kcal | 0.5 g | 11.3 g |
| Raisins (Kishmish) | 1 tablespoon · 15 g | 47 kcal | 0.4 g | 10.8 g |
One serving of each of these 8 items would come to about 653 kcal — a scale check, not a menu. Mangalwar Vrat is not a calorie target and this table is not a plan.

How to hold it without wrecking the week
This is the part nobody publishes well. None of it asks you to change the observance — training, sleep and meal timing are the variables you control, and the fast is not.
Training
If your observance excludes salt for the day, a hard sweaty session is the one thing that combines badly with it — you lose sodium and cannot replace it. Lighter work, or an earlier session, is the usual adjustment.
Sleep
Unaffected in most observances.
Blood sugar
A day built on jaggery and sweet prasad is a high-sugar day, not a low-calorie one. For anyone managing blood glucose that is the opposite of what the word 'fast' suggests, and it is worth planning for.
Hydration
Water freely. Without salt, very large volumes of plain water are less useful than steady moderate ones — the body holds onto fluid better when there is some sodium to hold it with.
The specific risk with Mangalwar Vrat
The combination of a no-salt day, heat and heavy sweating can produce cramps, headache and unusual fatigue. If you are on a diuretic or have been told to watch your sodium, this is a specific thing to raise with your doctor.

Questions asked about Mangalwar Vrat
Why is salt avoided on Mangalwar?
It is a customary restriction in many households observing the Hanuman vrat, and the reasoning is religious rather than dietary. Practice differs — plenty of families keep the fast without any salt rule at all.
Is a sweet fasting day still a fast?
In observance terms, yes — that is what the custom is. In physiological terms, a day of jaggery and sweet prasad can carry as many calories as a normal day and more sugar. Both things are true at once.

Practices are described as commonly observed; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
