Read this with it: IFCT 2017 has no barnyard millet entry, so the older ICMR–NIN table is the Indian source for it. The 9.8 g of fibre is CRUDE fibre and is not comparable with the dietary-fibre figures elsewhere on this site; it is an understatement. Ugare, Chimmad, Naik, Bharati and Itagi, Journal of Food Science and Technology, 2014, measured total dietary fibre in barnyard millet at 12.6 g per 100 g, and put energy at 398 kcal by bomb calorimeter rather than the 307 kcal that Atwater factors give. The two energy figures are measuring different things and should not be mixed.

How samak rice (barnyard millet) is counted here

  1. The serving is the portion this food is actually eaten in — 1 katori raw, taken as 80 g — not an anonymous 100 g.
  2. Composition is read off a named row: Nutritive Value of Indian Foods (ICMR–NIN) (Table 1, Proximate Principles: Common Foods, item 17, Sanwa millet (Echinochloa frumentacea; Hindi shama, Gujarati sama), page 47), and the label on that row is printed above rather than hidden.
  3. Carbohydrate is available carbohydrate. Where a source publishes carbohydrate by difference, the fibre is subtracted here and the subtraction is stated.
  4. Energy is reconciled against Atwater factors on every build; a value that disagrees with its own macros does not ship.
serving kcal = 307 kcal/100 g × (80 g ÷ 100) = 246 kcal

Observances it appears in

Where samak rice (barnyard millet) shows up in the food customarily associated with an observance on this site. This is a description of common practice, not a rule.

Where it sits on a fasting plate

Among the 11 entries in vrat flours & grains on this site, samak rice (barnyard millet) ranks 8 of 11 for energy density at 307 kcal per 100 g.

Protein supplies only 8% of its energy. Most of the vrat food list looks like this, which is exactly why protein during a vrat is the guide people need most.

It is energy-dense enough that a small portion carries a lot, which is easy to miss when it is eaten by the handful through a fasting day.

Questions

Is samak rice (barnyard millet) eaten during a vrat?

It is commonly eaten during a phalahar vrat in most households. Customs differ by family, region and community — this describes what is usual, not what is required. On this site it appears in the food list for Sharad Navratri, Chaitra Navratri, Paryushan Parva.

How many calories are in 1 katori raw of samak rice (barnyard millet)?

About 246 kcal for 1 katori raw, taken as 80 g (raw grain; one katori raw makes roughly three katori cooked). That is 5.0 g protein, 52.4 g carbohydrate and 1.8 g fat. Per 100 g it carries 307 kcal.

Is samak rice (barnyard millet) filling, or just energy?

Protein supplies only about 8% of its energy, so treat it as fuel rather than as something that will keep you full. Fibre is high at 9.8 g per 100 g. On a vrat that matters more than usual, because so much of the permitted food list is rapidly digested starch.

Practices are described as commonly observed; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
