মহাশিবরাত্রি
what is eaten, and how to hold it
महाशिवरात्रिমহাশিবরাত্রি
The fourteenth night of the waning moon in the month of Phalguna — usually February or March.

How long Maha Shivratri runs
≈ 24hours
Approximate, as the dataset states it. The exact length turns on your date and where you are. A day fast followed by a night of jagran. A day of fasting, most often phalahar with fruit, milk and permitted foods, followed by a night vigil with prayers through four prahars, and paran the next morning.
As the dataset states it: Roughly 24 hours across the day and the night vigil, with the night awake being the distinguishing feature.

What Maha Shivratri is
Maha Shivratri combines two demands that are usually kept apart: a fast during the day and a night without sleep. The vigil is the point of the observance — the night is divided into four prahars, each with its own puja.
For the body, the missed night is the larger stressor, not the missed food. One night of total sleep loss measurably reduces glucose tolerance, coordination and judgment for the following day or two, which is why the day AFTER Shivratri is the one worth planning for.
Customs vary. Whether the day is kept nirahar, phalahar or with a single meal, and how the night vigil is observed, differ widely — Shaiva traditions, regional practice and family custom all shape it. Thandai is customary in some regions and not others.
How this entry is drawn, and how the food is counted
- The observance is read from published accounts of Maha Shivratri and written as
- The arc above places the observed span between নামযুক্ত স্টেশন of the day — sunrise, midday, sunset, moonrise — and never between times. Sehri, iftar, moonrise and sunset are local and religiously significant, and this site publishes none of them.
- The length is taken from the range the dataset itself states, as a range. Where the length turns on latitude and season, no duration is printed at all.
- Food energy is per the serving each item is really eaten in, from IFCT 2017 (ICMR–NIN) where the table has the food, and from a named alternative where it does not.
- Every food is reconciled against Atwater factors on each build, and a page that fails to reconcile does not ship.
serving kcal = per-100 g kcal × (serving g ÷ 100) energy check = 4·protein + 4·carbohydrate + 9·fat (±15%, ±20% high-fibre) day shape = observed span, station → station (no clock times, ever)
What is customarily eaten, and what is set aside
Described as commonly observed. Your own family's practice is the one that applies.
Commonly eaten
- Fruit, milk and curd through the day
- Thandai, sabudana, makhana, potato and other permitted foods where a meal is taken
- Sendha namak
- Many keep the day on fruit and water alone
Customarily set aside
- Grains, pulses, table salt, onion and garlic
- Meat, fish, eggs and alcohol

How to hold it without wrecking the week
This is the part nobody publishes well. None of it asks you to change the observance — training, sleep and meal timing are the variables you control, and the fast is not.
Training
Do not schedule a hard session for the day after Shivratri. A sleepless night degrades power output, reaction time and recovery for 24 to 48 hours, and the injury risk on heavy compound lifts genuinely rises. Move the session, or make it a walk.
Sleep
You cannot avoid the sleep debt, but you can pay some of it forward. Sleeping longer the night before, and taking a proper afternoon nap on the day of Shivratri if your observance allows, cushions the vigil considerably. Afterwards, one long recovery sleep does more than several short ones.
Blood sugar
The combination of a fast and a sleepless night is a bad one for glucose control, because sleep deprivation itself raises insulin resistance sharply. Anyone with diabetes should treat this as a day needing a plan, not improvisation.
Hydration
Easy to neglect through a night vigil, and thandai or milk are often the only fluid taken. Plain water alongside them, through the night, prevents the flat, thick-headed morning that people usually attribute to the fast.
The specific risk with Maha Shivratri
Do not drive after the night vigil. Sleep-deprived driving is measurably comparable to driving over the alcohol limit, and Shivratri mornings are exactly when this happens. Arrange a lift, take public transport, or sleep first.

Questions asked about Maha Shivratri
Why do I feel worse the day after Shivratri than during it?
The vigil, not the fast. One night without sleep leaves reaction time, mood, appetite regulation and glucose tolerance measurably worse for the following day or two. Food replaces itself within hours; sleep does not.
Is thandai part of the observance?
It is customary in some regions and households and not in others. Where it is taken, note that a glass carries roughly 260 kcal with the milk, nuts and sugar in it — it is a food, not just a drink.
Can I train the next day?
You can, but heavy or technical training after a sleepless night carries a real injury risk from degraded coordination and judgment. Most people are better served by a walk on that day and a proper session once they have slept.

Practices are described as সাধারণভাবে দেখা যায়; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
