Great LentLent

Christian observance · মাঝারি · dates announced locally

The forty days before Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday in Western churches and on Clean Monday in the Orthodox tradition.

सूर्योदय Sunrise मध्याह्न Midday सूर्यास्त Sunset फलाहार Phalahar — permitted food only
The day is not drawn as abstention: what is set aside on Lent is a category of food, not the eating itself. The struck span is the part of the day the food rule holds over.

How long Lent runs

40দিন

Kept in full by some households and on selected days by others. Forty days of abstinence, observed very differently across churches. Enormously variable. Catholic practice centres on fasting and abstinence from meat on specific days; Orthodox Great Lent is a sustained dietary fast excluding meat, dairy, eggs, fish, oil and wine for much of the period; many Protestant traditions observe a personal giving-up rather than a dietary rule.

As the dataset states it: Forty days, with the intensity concentrated on particular days in some traditions and spread across the whole period in others.

What Lent is

Lent is the forty-day preparation for Easter, and what it means dietarily depends almost entirely on which church you belong to. Roman Catholic practice requires abstinence from meat on Fridays and fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday; Eastern Orthodox Great Lent is a sustained fast that excludes meat, dairy, eggs and fish, and on stricter days oil and wine as well.

Orthodox Great Lent is, in nutritional terms, close to seven weeks of veganism with additional restrictions, which is the version with real physiological consequences. It is also the version with the most established tradition of pastoral flexibility for the ill, the young, the elderly and the pregnant.

Customs vary. The rules differ fundamentally between Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant traditions, and within each there is pastoral discretion. Your parish, not a website, is the source for what your tradition asks.

How this entry is drawn, and how the food is counted

  1. The observance is read from published accounts of Lent and written as
  2. The arc above places the observed span between নামযুক্ত স্টেশন of the day — sunrise, midday, sunset, moonrise — and never between times. Sehri, iftar, moonrise and sunset are local and religiously significant, and this site publishes none of them.
  3. The length is taken from the range the dataset itself states, as a range. Where the length turns on latitude and season, no duration is printed at all.
  4. Food energy is per the serving each item is really eaten in, from IFCT 2017 (ICMR–NIN) where the table has the food, and from a named alternative where it does not.
  5. Every food is reconciled against Atwater factors on each build, and a page that fails to reconcile does not ship.
serving kcal = per-100 g kcal × (serving g ÷ 100)
energy check = 4·protein + 4·carbohydrate + 9·fat (±15%, ±20% high-fibre)
day shape = observed span, station → station (no clock times, ever)

What is customarily eaten, and what is set aside

Described as commonly observed. Your own family's practice is the one that applies.

Commonly eaten

  • In Orthodox practice: vegetables, pulses, grains, fruit, nuts, and shellfish in some traditions
  • In Catholic practice: normal food, with meat set aside on the days specified and two smaller meals on fast days
  • In many Protestant traditions: a personal abstention chosen for the period

Customarily set aside

  • Meat, on the days specified — universally
  • In Orthodox practice: also dairy, eggs, fish, and on stricter days oil and wine

The food, with the numbers

Foods commonly associated with Lent, at the serving each is really eaten in. Every one has its own page with the full breakdown.

How to hold it without wrecking the week

This is the part nobody publishes well. None of it asks you to change the observance — training, sleep and meal timing are the variables you control, and the fast is not.

Training

Orthodox Great Lent removes the majority of most people's dietary protein for seven weeks. Anyone training seriously through it needs pulses, nuts and grains combined deliberately rather than incidentally — otherwise seven weeks of low protein alongside training costs muscle. Catholic-style abstinence on specified days has essentially no training consequence.

Sleep

Largely unaffected in any version.

Blood sugar

A sustained plant-based period changes glycaemic patterns, generally favourably, but any medication adjustment needs a doctor rather than assumption.

Hydration

Unaffected — Lenten fasting in every mainstream tradition permits water.

The specific risk with Lent

Seven weeks without animal protein needs planning to avoid running short on protein, B12 and iron, particularly for adolescents, pregnant women and the elderly. Every tradition observing it provides for those who should not.

Questions asked about Lent

Is Lent the same in every church?

No — the differences are large. Orthodox Great Lent excludes meat, dairy, eggs and fish for most of the period; Catholic practice concentrates on meat-free Fridays and two fast days; many Protestant traditions leave it to the individual. Ask your own parish.

How do I get protein during a strict Lent?

Pulses, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and whole grains, eaten at every meal rather than occasionally. Seven weeks is long enough that offhand planning shows up as lost muscle and low iron.

Practices are described as সাধারণভাবে দেখা যায়; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
