How long Ganesh Chaturthi runs
940–1,150kcal
One serving of each food listed below, ±10% for the hand that cooks it. A scale check, not a target. A festival of prasad more than a fast. A fast is kept on the first day in many households, but the defining dietary feature of the festival is the opposite of fasting: modak, ladoo and prasad in quantity, over up to eleven days.
As the dataset states it: One day of fasting for many; the festival itself runs up to eleven days.

What Ganesh Chaturthi is
Ganesh Chaturthi is on this site for an honest reason: it is the observance where people are most likely to gain rather than lose. A single fasting day sits at the front of a festival built around sweets, and the eleven days of visits, prasad and shared food that follow are where the calories actually are.
Nothing here suggests refusing prasad. Prasad is prasad. But it is worth knowing that a modak is roughly 120 to 180 kcal, and that eleven days of them alongside normal meals is a real amount of extra food.
Customs vary. The length of the festival — one and a half, five, seven, ten or eleven days — is a family matter, and so is whether a fast is kept at all on the first day.
How this entry is drawn, and how the food is counted
- The observance is read from published accounts of Ganesh Chaturthi and written as సాధారణంగా కనిపించేది — never as required, never as correct. Where households differ, the entry says they differ.
- The arc above places the observed span between named stations of the day — sunrise, midday, sunset, moonrise — and never between times. Sehri, iftar, moonrise and sunset are local and religiously significant, and this site publishes none of them.
- The length is taken from the range the dataset itself states, as a range. Where the length turns on latitude and season, no duration is printed at all.
- Food energy is per the serving each item is really eaten in, from IFCT 2017 (ICMR–NIN) where the table has the food, and from a named alternative where it does not.
- Every food is reconciled against Atwater factors on each build, and a page that fails to reconcile does not ship.
serving kcal = per-100 g kcal × (serving g ÷ 100) energy check = 4·protein + 4·carbohydrate + 9·fat (±15%, ±20% high-fibre) day shape = observed span, station → station (no clock times, ever)

The food, with the numbers
Foods commonly associated with Ganesh Chaturthi, at the serving each is really eaten in. Every one has its own page with the full breakdown.
| Food | One serving is | Calories | Protein | Carbs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh Coconut (Nariyal) | 1 piece · 30 g | 107 kcal | 1.1 g | 3.0 g |
| Jaggery (Gur) | 1 small piece · 20 g | 77 kcal | 0.1 g | 19.0 g |
| Rajgira Ladoo | 1 ladoo · 30 g | 127 kcal | 1.8 g | 20.5 g |
| ఆవు పాలు (ఫుల్ క్రీమ్) | 1 glass · 200 g | 124 kcal | 6.4 g | 9.0 g |
| Banana | 1 medium banana · 100 g | 105 kcal | 1.3 g | 24.0 g |
| Sabudana Khichdi | 1 plate · 150 g | 321 kcal | 3.8 g | 47.4 g |
| Makhana (Fox Nuts), raw | 1 katori · 25 g | 87 kcal | 2.4 g | 19.2 g |
| Khoya (Mawa) | 1 small piece · 30 g | 95 kcal | 4.9 g | 5.0 g |
One serving of each of these 8 items would come to about 1,042 kcal — a scale check, not a menu. Ganesh Chaturthi is not a calorie target and this table is not a plan.

How to hold it without wrecking the week
This is the part nobody publishes well. None of it asks you to change the observance — training, sleep and meal timing are the variables you control, and the fast is not.
Training
This is one of the few observances where the useful advice is to keep training normally rather than to reduce it. Eleven days of surplus and no training is what actually shows up afterwards.
Sleep
Late visarjan nights and late meals are the main disruptors. Nothing clever to do here beyond protecting the nights you can.
Blood sugar
For anyone managing blood glucose, the festival matters far more than the fast day. Prasad is concentrated sugar and ghee, repeated across many days and many houses. Planning for that — with a doctor, honestly, rather than pretending it will not happen — is more useful than any advice about the single fasting day.
Hydration
Ordinary. Long days out at pandals in humid weather are the actual fluid risk, not the fast.
The specific risk with Ganesh Chaturthi
For people with diabetes this is a high-sugar stretch, not a fasting stretch, and it lasts up to eleven days. That is worth a conversation with your doctor before the festival rather than after it.

Questions asked about Ganesh Chaturthi
How many calories are in a modak?
A steamed ukadiche modak with coconut and jaggery filling is roughly 120 kcal; a fried one is closer to 180. Two a day for eleven days is around 3,000 extra kcal, which is most of a kilogram of body weight.
Should I refuse prasad if I am dieting?
That is your call and your tradition's, and this site is not going to advise anyone to refuse prasad. What helps in practice is adjusting the rest of the day around it rather than treating the prasad as the problem.

Practices are described as సాధారణంగా కనిపించేది; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
