Chaitra Navratri
what is eaten, and how to hold it

Almanac entry

चैत्र नवरात्रिChaitra Navratri

Hindu observances · Demanding · dates announced locally

Nine nights in the lunar month of Chaitra, in spring — usually March or April.

सूर्योदय Sunrise मध्याह्न Midday सूर्यास्त Sunset फलाहार Phalahar — permitted food only
The day is not drawn as abstention: what is set aside on Chaitra Navratri is a category of food, not the eating itself. The struck span is the part of the day the food rule holds over.

How long Chaitra Navratri runs

9రోజులు

Kept in full by some households and on selected days by others. Spring Navratri, ending at Ram Navami. The same phalahar pattern as Sharad Navratri, kept for nine days, with the ninth day observed as Ram Navami.

As the dataset states it: Nine days, with the same range of practice: some keep all nine, some the first and last, some only Ashtami or Navami.

What Chaitra Navratri is

Chaitra Navratri opens the traditional new year in much of North and West India and closes on Ram Navami. The dietary observance is essentially the same as in autumn; the season around it is not.

The practical difference is heat. Chaitra runs into the beginning of the Indian summer, and a nine-day fast in rising temperatures loses fluid and electrolytes far faster than the same fast in October. Almost everything that goes wrong during Chaitra Navratri goes wrong through dehydration.

Customs vary. The Chaitra observance is kept more widely in some regions than others, and the level of it — nine days, two days, or a single day — is a family matter. Gudi Padwa and Ugadi fall at the same point and are observed differently again.

How this entry is drawn, and how the food is counted

  1. The observance is read from published accounts of Chaitra Navratri and written as సాధారణంగా కనిపించేది — never as required, never as correct. Where households differ, the entry says they differ.
  2. The arc above places the observed span between named stations of the day — sunrise, midday, sunset, moonrise — and never between times. Sehri, iftar, moonrise and sunset are local and religiously significant, and this site publishes none of them.
  3. The length is taken from the range the dataset itself states, as a range. Where the length turns on latitude and season, no duration is printed at all.
  4. Food energy is per the serving each item is really eaten in, from IFCT 2017 (ICMR–NIN) where the table has the food, and from a named alternative where it does not.
  5. Every food is reconciled against Atwater factors on each build, and a page that fails to reconcile does not ship.

What is customarily eaten, and what is set aside

Described as commonly observed. Your own family's practice is the one that applies.

Commonly eaten

  • Fruit, milk and curd
  • Kuttu, singhara, rajgira and samak in place of cereals
  • Sabudana, makhana, potato and other permitted tubers
  • Sendha namak
  • Cooling drinks — chaas, coconut water, nimbu pani — which matter more in this season

Customarily set aside

  • Wheat, rice and common cereals
  • Table salt, onion and garlic
  • Meat, fish, eggs and alcohol
  • Pulses, in most households

How to hold it without wrecking the week

This is the part nobody publishes well. None of it asks you to change the observance — training, sleep and meal timing are the variables you control, and the fast is not.

Training

Train earlier in the day if you can, and expect the same session to feel harder in the heat on less fuel. Outdoor running at midday during a spring fast is the combination most likely to end badly. If your tradition permits it, moving the session to before the day's first meal or well after it is the usual adjustment.

Sleep

Warm nights plus a late fried meal is a poor combination. Keeping the last intake light — milk, fruit, chaas — helps far more in Chaitra than it does in autumn.

Blood sugar

Same as autumn Navratri: the food is starch-heavy, and the medication question belongs with your doctor before day one. Heat adds a second variable, because dehydration can concentrate blood glucose readings and make them harder to interpret.

Hydration

This is the whole game in Chaitra. Plain water, chaas, coconut water and nimbu pani, spread through the day rather than in two large volumes. Dark urine, a dull headache and a resting heart rate 10 beats above normal are the three signs that fluid is short.

The specific risk with Chaitra Navratri

Heat plus fasting is a genuine risk combination, not a mild one. Dizziness on standing, a headache that does not clear, confusion, cramping, or stopping sweating in the heat are reasons to stop and get help, not to push through.

Questions asked about Chaitra Navratri

Is Chaitra Navratri harder than Sharad Navratri?

Physiologically, usually yes, for one reason: temperature. The dietary pattern is the same, but fluid loss is much higher in March and April, and dehydration is what actually makes people ill during a fast.

What should I drink during a spring vrat?

Plain water first. Beyond that, chaas, tender coconut water and nimbu pani are all customary, all light, and all replace some of what sweating takes out. Sugary bottled drinks add energy without much benefit.

Practices are described as సాధారణంగా కనిపించేది; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
