Almanac entry

शारदीय नवरात्रिSharad Navratri

Hindu observances · Demanding · dates announced locally

Nine nights in the lunar month of Ashwin, in autumn — usually falling in September or October.

सूर्योदय Sunrise मध्याह्न Midday सूर्यास्त Sunset फलाहार Phalahar — permitted food only
The day is not drawn as abstention: what is set aside on Sharad Navratri is a category of food, not the eating itself. The struck span is the part of the day the food rule holds over.

How long Sharad Navratri runs

9రోజులు

Kept in full by some households and on selected days by others. Nine days, the longest vrat most people keep. Nine consecutive days of phalahar — fruit, milk, and a defined set of non-cereal foods — kept by some for all nine days and by others only on the first and last, or on Ashtami and Navami.

As the dataset states it: Nine days. Most people eat one or two full phalahar meals a day plus fruit and milk; a smaller number keep a single meal a day, and a few keep nirjala on individual days.

What Sharad Navratri is

Sharad Navratri is nine nights dedicated to the nine forms of Durga, and it is the longest sustained dietary observance in the Hindu year for most households. It ends with Vijayadashami.

What makes it different from a one-day vrat is duration. A single skipped day does almost nothing to a body; nine days of eating differently changes sleep, digestion, training capacity and — for anyone on diabetes medication — blood glucose, which is why it is the observance this site treats most carefully.

Customs vary. Whether a household keeps all nine days, whether tomatoes and certain vegetables are included, whether paneer is used, and whether Ashtami or Navami is the day of kanya pujan and paran — all of this differs by family, region and sampradaya. Follow your own.

How this entry is drawn, and how the food is counted

  1. The observance is read from published accounts of Sharad Navratri and written as సాధారణంగా కనిపించేది — never as required, never as correct. Where households differ, the entry says they differ.
  2. The arc above places the observed span between named stations of the day — sunrise, midday, sunset, moonrise — and never between times. Sehri, iftar, moonrise and sunset are local and religiously significant, and this site publishes none of them.
  3. The length is taken from the range the dataset itself states, as a range. Where the length turns on latitude and season, no duration is printed at all.
  4. Food energy is per the serving each item is really eaten in, from IFCT 2017 (ICMR–NIN) where the table has the food, and from a named alternative where it does not.
  5. Every food is reconciled against Atwater factors on each build, and a page that fails to reconcile does not ship.

How to hold it without wrecking the week

This is the part nobody publishes well. None of it asks you to change the observance — training, sleep and meal timing are the variables you control, and the fast is not.

Training

Nine days of low-protein, high-starch eating is where lifters lose the most. If your tradition permits dairy, milk, curd and paneer are the practical protein source, and rajgira is the highest-protein of the vrat flours. Many people find it easier to keep training but drop the volume — same movements, fewer hard sets — rather than train hard on half the fuel and feel wrecked by day four. That is an option, not a rule; some people train through Navratri exactly as normal and are fine.

Sleep

The two things that break sleep during Navratri are a very late heavy paran meal and jagran nights. If the last meal is fried — puris, vada, thalipeeth — eaten close to bed, expect reflux and a shallow first half of the night. Eating the heavier meal earlier and keeping the late one to fruit and milk is the single change that helps most.

Blood sugar

Vrat food is starch-dominant almost by definition: sabudana, potato, sago, singhara flour. For anyone with diabetes this is a genuinely different glycaemic load from a normal week, not a lighter one. Nine days of it, especially with medication timed to ordinary meals, needs a doctor's input before the vrat starts — not on day three when something has gone wrong.

Hydration

Nine days of phalahar tends to reduce water intake without anyone noticing, because so much of a normal day's fluid arrives with meals, chai and dal. Coconut water, chaas, nimbu pani and plain water carry it here. Headache on day two is very often dehydration and caffeine withdrawal, not the fast itself.

The specific risk with Sharad Navratri

Nine consecutive days is long enough for real problems to develop in people who are already vulnerable. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on insulin or sulfonylureas, recovering from illness, or have a history of disordered eating, this is the observance to discuss with a doctor before it begins.

Questions asked about Sharad Navratri

Is sabudana khichdi actually light?

No. A plate of sabudana khichdi comes to roughly 350 kcal, mostly starch and the ghee or oil it is cooked in, with about 5 g of protein. It is a perfectly good vrat food; it is just not a diet food, and people are often surprised to find they finish Navratri heavier than they started.

Can I train during Navratri?

Many people do, and many people find they need to reduce the load. There is no religious barrier to exercise in most households' observance — the limit is practical: less protein, more starch and less total food make hard training feel harder and recover worse. Reducing volume while keeping frequency is the usual compromise.

How do I get protein on a phalahar vrat?

If your family's observance includes dairy, that is the answer: milk, curd, paneer and khoya. Rajgira flour is the highest-protein of the vrat flours at about 13.3 g per 100 g, and peanuts and almonds add more where they are included. If dairy is set aside as well, protein for nine days will be low, and that is worth knowing rather than pretending otherwise.

Practices are described as సాధారణంగా కనిపించేది; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
