Four days in each lunar month — the new moon, full moon and the two quarter days — observed most widely in Theravada communities.

The struck span is the part of the day held without food, from sunrise to next sunrise, as commonly observed. Households differ, and where they differ the difference is the practice, not an error.

How long Uposatha runs

≈ 18hours

Approximate, as the dataset states it. The exact length turns on your date and where you are. Not eating after noon, on observance days. The Eight Precepts are taken for the day, one of which is to abstain from eating after midday. Nothing solid is eaten from noon until the following dawn.

As the dataset states it: From noon to dawn the next day, so roughly 18 hours without solid food.

What Uposatha is

Uposatha days are observance days in the Theravada Buddhist calendar, kept at the new moon, full moon and quarter moons. Lay practitioners often take the Eight Precepts for the day, one of which is abstaining from food after midday.

It is a distinctive pattern: not a fast from dawn, but a fast from noon. Food is eaten normally in the morning and then nothing solid until the next day. Water and, in many traditions, certain clear liquids remain permitted.

Customs vary. What counts as an allowable afternoon drink differs between traditions and monasteries; the practice among lay people also ranges from occasional to every observance day.

How this entry is drawn, and how the food is counted

  1. The observance is read from published accounts of Uposatha and written as commonly observed — never as required, never as correct. Where households differ, the entry says they differ.
  2. The arc above places the observed span between named stations of the day — sunrise, midday, sunset, moonrise — and never between times. Sehri, iftar, moonrise and sunset are local and religiously significant, and this site publishes none of them.
  3. The length is taken from the range the dataset itself states, as a range. Where the length turns on latitude and season, no duration is printed at all.
  4. Food energy is per the serving each item is really eaten in, from IFCT 2017 (ICMR–NIN) where the table has the food, and from a named alternative where it does not.
  5. Every food is reconciled against Atwater factors on each build, and a page that fails to reconcile does not ship.
serving kcal = per-100 g kcal × (serving g ÷ 100)
energy check = 4·protein + 4·carbohydrate + 9·fat (±15%, ±20% high-fibre)
day shape = observed span, station → station (no clock times, ever)

What is customarily eaten, and what is set aside

Described as commonly observed. Your own family's practice is the one that applies.

Commonly eaten

  • Normal meals in the morning, finishing before midday
  • Water, and in many traditions certain clear drinks, through the afternoon and evening

Customarily set aside

  • Solid food after midday until dawn the following day
  • The other Eight Precepts apply for the day — including abstaining from intoxicants and from entertainment

The food, with the numbers

How to hold it without wrecking the week

This is the part nobody publishes well. None of it asks you to change the observance — training, sleep and meal timing are the variables you control, and the fast is not.

Training

An 18-hour overnight fast beginning at noon is easy to train around — a morning session sits perfectly inside the eating window. An evening session is the awkward one, since there is no meal after it.

Sleep

Some people sleep better with an early last meal; others find hunger disrupts the night at first and settles within a few observances.

Blood sugar

A regular after-noon fast is a predictable pattern and easy to plan a medication schedule around, but that planning should still be a doctor's.

Hydration

Water is permitted throughout, which removes most of the risk that other fasts carry.

The specific risk with Uposatha

Low for healthy adults. The evening without food is a meaningful change for anyone whose medication requires food at night.

Questions asked about Uposatha

Is water allowed after noon?

Yes in the standard formulation — the precept concerns solid food. Which other liquids are permitted differs between traditions.

How long is the fast?

From midday until dawn the next day, so around 18 hours, of which about eight are spent asleep. That makes it one of the more manageable regular patterns described on this site.

Practices are described as commonly observed; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
