प्रोटीन during a vrat
A single fast day with low protein is nothing at all. Nine days of it, alongside training, is enough to cost muscle — and the fix is entirely within the permitted foods in most households.
Where the protein actually is
| भोजन | Protein /100 g | Typical serving | Protein /serving |
|---|---|---|---|
| पनीर | 18.3 g | 50 g portion | 9.2 g |
| Rajgira atta | 13.3 g | 1 paratha (90 g cooked) | 6.9 g |
| मूंगफली | 25.0 g | 1 handful (25 g) | 6.3 g |
| बादाम | 20.5 g | 10 almonds (12 g) | 2.5 g |
| Kuttu atta | 12.6 g | 1 paratha (90 g cooked) | 6.7 g |
| Makhana | 9.7 g | 1 katori (25 g) | 2.4 g |
| दूध | 3.2 g | 1 glass (200 ml) | 6.4 g |
| दही | 3.1 g | 1 katori (150 g) | 4.7 g |
| Samak rice | 6.2 g | 1 katori cooked | 5.3 g |
| Sabudana | 0.2 g | 1 plate khichdi | 5.3 g (mostly from the peanuts) |
| Singhara atta | 6.5 g | 2 puris | 3.5 g |
| Potato | 1.6 g | 1 मध्यम | 1.9 g |
The realistic day
A phalahar day built on sabudana khichdi, two kuttu puris, aloo and fruit comes to only about 14 g of protein — roughly a quarter of the ~58 g an ICMR–NIN requirement gives a 70 kg adult, and a small fraction of what someone training regularly would aim for.
The same day with a glass of milk at breakfast, a katori of curd with lunch, a rajgira paratha instead of a singhara puri and a handful of peanuts comes to around 50 g. That is the difference between losing muscle over nine days and not, and none of it steps outside what most households permit.
When dairy is set aside too
Some observances exclude dairy as well, and Orthodox Great Lent excludes it for seven weeks. In that case the honest answer is that protein will be low, and the sensible response is to reduce training load rather than to chase a target that the permitted foods cannot reach.
Within the permitted list, rajgira, peanuts and nuts do the most work. Nine days at low protein is not a health problem for a healthy adult; it is a training problem, and training is the thing you can adjust.
What not to do
- Do not decide a religious restriction is negotiable because a website published a protein table. It is not, and this page is not suggesting it.
- Do not replace the shortfall with more ghee and more fried food, which is the usual accidental substitution — it adds energy without adding protein.
- Do not assume a protein supplement is permitted. Whether whey or any other preparation fits your observance is a question for your tradition, not for a nutrition table.

Questions about protein during a vrat
How much protein do I actually need?
General guidance for a healthy adult is around 0.8 g per kg of body weight as a minimum, with people training regularly usually targeting considerably more — often 1.4 to 2.0 g per kg. Over nine days, falling short is a training issue rather than a health one for most healthy adults.
Is paneer allowed during Navratri?
In many households yes, in some no. It varies by family and sampradaya, like most of what is on this site. Where it is permitted it is by far the most protein-dense vrat food available.
Can I take whey protein during a vrat?
Whether a manufactured supplement fits an observance is a religious question, not a nutritional one, and it is not one this site will answer. Ask whoever you would normally ask about a food's suitability.
