The fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik — usually October or November.

The struck span is the part of the day held without food or water, from sunrise to moonrise, as commonly observed. Households differ, and where they differ the difference is the practice, not an error.

How long Karva Chauth runs

12–15hours

As commonly observed. The exact length turns on your date and where you are, and this site publishes no times. Sunrise to moonrise, kept without water in its full form. Kept from before sunrise until the moon is sighted, in its full form without food or water. It begins with sargi, a pre-dawn meal customarily sent by the mother-in-law.

From before sunrise to moonrise — commonly 12 to 15 hours depending on the date and where you are.

What Karva Chauth is

Karva Chauth is kept most widely in North India, traditionally by married women for the wellbeing of their husbands, and increasingly by both partners in many households. The fast runs from before dawn until the moon is sighted through a sieve and the fast is broken.

It is a long dry fast on an ordinary working day, which is what makes it physically demanding in a way a phalahar day is not. Almost everything that determines how the day goes is decided at sargi, before sunrise, and that is the part this site can actually help with.

What sargi contains, whether water is taken through the day, and whether the fast is kept by one partner or both are all family customs and differ widely across regions and households.

  1. The observance is read from published accounts of Karva Chauth and written as commonly observed — कधीही आवश्यक म्हणून नाही, कधीही बरोबर म्हणून नाही.

Training

A 13-hour dry fast on a working day is not a day for a hard session. Most people who train do the session the day before, or a light walk on the day itself. If you must do something, keep it short, indoors and unhurried, and stop early if you feel light-headed.

Sleep

The pre-dawn sargi shortens the night at one end and the late moonrise meal extends it at the other, so Karva Chauth costs sleep from both directions. Going to bed early the night before is worth more than anything you can do on the day.

Blood sugar

A long dry fast is a real concern for anyone on insulin or sulfonylureas, because these can cause hypoglycaemia when meals are missed. This needs a doctor's plan made in advance. Do not simply skip a dose and hope.

Hydration

Front-load at sargi: fluid with the pre-dawn meal, and milk or coconut water rather than only tea, which is a diuretic and starts the day at a deficit. Salt in the sargi meal helps you retain what you drink. Afterwards, rehydrate steadily rather than in one enormous glass.

The specific risk with Karva Chauth

Headache, dizziness on standing and nausea by late afternoon are common and usually reflect dehydration and caffeine withdrawal. Fainting, confusion, chest pain or a hypoglycaemic episode are not part of the observance and need help immediately. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes on medication, migraine and a history of fainting are all specific reasons to speak to a doctor about a modified observance — which most families accommodate.

Questions asked about Karva Chauth

What should sargi contain?

Whatever your family's custom is — but if you have any say in it, fluid and slow-digesting food do the most work: milk, curd or kheer, fruit, a few dates and nuts, and something with a little salt. A very sweet, very light sargi tends to make mid-morning hunger and headache worse, not better.

Why do I get a headache by the afternoon?

Usually two things together: fluid loss over twelve hours, and caffeine withdrawal if you normally have chai or coffee in the morning. Tapering caffeine for a couple of days beforehand is the change that helps most, and costs nothing in the observance itself.

Can I keep Karva Chauth while pregnant?

That is a question for your doctor and your family, not a website. A long dry fast increases dehydration risk in pregnancy, and most families readily accept a modified observance. Many traditions explicitly exempt pregnant women.

Practices are described as commonly observed; customs differ by family, region, community and sampradaya, and this site is not an authority on any of them. Food values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), the older ICMR–NIN tables, USDA FoodData Central, named composition studies and the shared ThaliFacts dataset, reconciled against Atwater factors on every build. Which source applies to which food is listed per food, and every source carries the date it was last checked. General information only — not medical or religious guidance. Fasting is not safe for everyone, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes or other conditions. Speak to a doctor first.
